The Rees Hotel & Luxury Apartments (Queenstown)

Hay hoteles de lujo con todo tipo de comodidades pero sin mucho más. The Rees ofrece además un encanto muy especial gracias a sus impresionantes vistas al lago Wakatipu, su acogedora decoración y unas habitaciones y apartamentos (de uno, dos o tres dormitorios) en los que no falta de nada, desde cocina completamente equipada (incluso con lavadora y secadora) hasta una chimenea en el salón que se enciende con mando a distancia. Además sus amenities son de de lo más completas y tienen parking gratis para los clientes y un servicio de shuttle al centro de la ciudad. También existe la posibilidad de ir en una de las bicicletas que alquilan en el hotel o en Water Taxi atravesando el lago. No es que estuviera deseando volver, es que me habría quedado a vivir allí.

There are many luxury hotels with all kind of comforts and facilities but with nothing else. However The Rees offers a very special charm thanks to its amazing panoramic views to the Wakatipu lake, its warm and cosy decoration and its rooms and 1-3 bedroom apartments where everything is included, from a fully equipped kitchen (even with washing machine and dryer) to a gas fireplace in the living room that you can light with a remote control! The high-quality amenities are really complete and it has a complimentary underground parking for the guests and shuttle to the city centre. You can also rent a bike at the lodge or take a Water Taxi to go to the city centre crossing the lake. In this case I am not looking forward to coming back, I just want to live at The Rees!

Fjærland (Noruega)

Este pequeño pueblo noruego de sólo 280 habitantes es el punto de partida de los ferries que recorren el fiordo de los sueños (Sognefjord), uno de los más impresionantes y grandes del país, y está situado además muy cerca del glaciar Jostedalsbreen. Como muchos otros pueblos noruegos el color de sus casas, el verde de su naturaleza y la paz de sus calles lo convierten en un lugar idílico y lleno de magia. Pero lo más curioso de Fjærland es la cantidad de librerías que alberga. Las hay por todos los rincones del pueblo, en casas, en establos, en estanterías o bancos en plena calle. Venden libros de segunda mano, la mayoría de ellos en noruego (¿la excusa perfecta para aprender un nuevo idioma?). No en vano Fjærland es conocido como el Norwegian Book Town.

This little Norwegian village of only 280 inhabitants is the point of departure of the ferries that cover the Sognefjord, one of the most incredible and biggest fiords in the country, and it is also very close to the Jostedalsbreen glacier. Like in many other Norwegian villages the color of the houses, the green of the vegetation and the peace of its streets make Fjærland an idyllic place full of magic. But the most curious thing of this village is the amount of bookstores that it has. You can find them everywhere: in houses, in stables, in bookshelves or benches in the street. They sell second-hand books, most of them in Norwegian (the perfect excuse to learn a new language?). Not in vain Fjærland is known as the "Norwegian Book Town".

PN de los lagos de Plitvice (Croacia)

No he vuelto a ver ese azul turquesa en ningún otro sitio. Y es que el color del agua de los 16 lagos y de las casi cien cataratas de este impresionante parque natural croata no es comparable ni con el del Caribe. Es uno de esos sitios como el Cañón del Colorado o el Perito Moreno que sorprenden por la diversidad de su paraje, tan diferente a lo que se haya podido ver antes. Hay diversas rutas para recorrer, para todos los niveles. Ojo, a media mañana puedes encontrarte con más turistas de los que te gustaría. Recomendable madrugar y llevar comida para evitar esperas pesadas.

I have never seen that blue again anywhere else. In fact, the color of the water of the 16 lakes and of the almost one hundred waterfalls of this amazing Croatian natural park is not even comparable to the Caribbean. It’s one of those places, like the Grand Canyon or the Perito Moreno, which surprises the visitor because of its diversity, a spot completely different than any other that you have previously seen. There are many different routes, for all possible levels. Be careful, at midday you may find more tourists than desirable. It’s advisable to get up early and to bring your own food to avoid long, tedious queues.

Mercado de San Miguel

El antiguo mercado de San Miguel reabrió sus puertas hace cuatro años para convertirse en uno de los templos gourmet de Madrid. Ideal para tomar un buen vino con una ración de jamón recién cortada, o unas ostras y una copa de champán a la hora del aperitivo, o para disfrutar de un refrescante mojito después de cenar. Y también para hacer una compra especial a base de embutidos de primera calidad, pasta fresca artesana o panes de todo tipo. La vuelta está garantizada.

The old San Miguel market reopened its doors four years ago to become one of the gourmet temples of Madrid. It’s a perfect place to drink a good wine with a portion of freshly cut ham, or maybe some oysters with champagne as an appetizer before lunch, or even to enjoy a refreshing mojito after diner. And also to do some special shopping consisting of first-quality deli meats, handmade fresh pasta or all kinds of breads. You will come back, I am sure.

They open every day of the week at 10.00 in the morning and they close at midnight every day except for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays when the stalls remain open until 2.00 in the morning.

Mamá Framboise (Madrid)

Una embarazada aprovechando la excusa de su feliz estado para dar buena cuenta de la carta; dos jóvenes universitarias trabajando con sus portátiles mientras se toman un café; Carlos Jean desayunando con una amiga. Todo en el mismo local, en Mamá Framboise, un nuevo café-pastelería de estilo francés que sorprende por su exclusiva y cuidada decoración y por su deliciosa bollería. Y lo mejor, a precios más que razonables, algo que no suele ser habitual en este tipo de locales. Impresionantes los croissants, imprescindible la tarta de fambruesas que da nombre al local, imponentes las quitches. Vuelta asegurada.

A pregnant woman trying each of the delights of the menu with the excuse of her happy state; two University students working with their laptops while they have a coffee; the DJ Carlos Jean having breakfast with a friend. All in the same café, in Mamá Framboise, a new café-patisserie in a French style which surprises for its exclusive and impeccable decoration and for its delicious pastries. And all this at affordable prices… something rather unusual in this kind of business. Three musts you cannot miss: the croissants, the raspberry cake (after which is named the café) and the quitches. El jardín secreto (Madrid)

Un pequeño capricho entre la madrileña calle Princesa y el barrio de San Bernardo. Cada visita es diferente porque cada rincón de este jardín secreto es totalmente distinto a los demás. No hay dos mesas iguales. Pero todas ellas comparten el mismo encanto, siempre con luz tenue y una decoración entre acogedora y romántica. Preparan deliciosos y variados batidos, limonadas, tés, chocolates (sólo en los meses más fríos) y originales zumos, y cuentan además con una completísima carta de cafés. Es ideal para ir a merendar entre amigos (impresionantes las tartas caseras) o para tomar un cocktail en pareja a última hora de la noche, pero sirven también platos variados para cenar. Para volver y volver a volver. Eso sí, no dejes de reservar, o será casi imposible que consigas mesa.

A little whim between the Princesa Street and the San Bernardo neighborhood in Madrid. Each  visit is different because each corner in this secret garden is completely different to the others. There are no two similar tables. But all of them share the same charm, always with a faint light and a romantic and cozy decoration. They prepare delicious and varied milkshakes, lemonades, teas, chocolates (only in the cold months) and original juices, and they have a complete coffee menu. Perfect to take a tea with your friends (their homemade cakes are a must!) or a cocktail with your partner at the end of the day, but they also cook a choice of dishes for dinner. You will want to come back again and again! Attention! Don’t forget to book a table, otherwise it will be almost impossible to get one.

Termas de Saturnia (Italia)

En la localidad toscana de Manciano se encuentran estas termas de agua sulfurosa de más de 37ºC en un paraje de espectacular belleza. Sus aguas cuentan con excelentes propiedades terapéuticas. Es recomendable ir a última hora de la tarde para no pasar demasiado calor en el agua y para poder contemplar el atardecer cómodamente desde uno de los asientos formados por las rocas dentro del agua, como un antiguo romano. Cuando cae la noche se puede disfrutar del cielo estrellado, todo un placer contemplarlo sin salir del agua.

Lo más llamativo de este paraíso natural es que no está en absoluto explotado para el turismo. No se paga entrada. No se puede comprar comida ni bebida. No hay parking asfaltado ni iluminación cuando cae la noche. O al menos así era cuando estuve yo hace un par de años. Aunque sí existen en la zona centros y balnearios que se sirven de estas aguas para ofrecer todo tipo de tratamientos relajantes y beneficiosos para el aparato circulatorio y para el metabolismo.

Una única pega: el olor que se queda en el bañador, en la piel y en el pelo después del baño no es demasiado agradable ni desaparece con la primera ducha.

In the Tuscan town of Manciano you will find these thermal springs of over 37ºC sulfurous water in a spot of unequalled beauty. Its water has excellent therapeutic properties. I recommend to go at the end of the afternoon so it is not too hot and so that you can contemplate the dusk comfortably from one of the seats created by the rocks inside the water, as if you were a true old Roman. Cuando cae la noche se puede disfrutar del cielo estrellado, todo un placer contemplarlo sin salir del agua.

The most amazing thing of this natural paradise is that it is not exploited at all for tourism. You don’t pay an entrance fee. You won’t be able to buy food nor drinks. There is no asphalted parking lot nor lighting when it gets dark. Or at least that’s how it was when I was there a couple of years ago. However there are in the area some wellness centers and spas which use this water to offer all kinds of relaxing and beneficial treatments for the circulatory system and for the metabolism.

Just one snag: the smell that gets into the swimsuit, into the skin and into the hair after the bath is not very nice and will not disappear after the first shower.
